Joy Mayer, an instructor at the Missouri School of Journalism, led a day-long workshop on using social media to communicate with the community on Friday, July 20, at the Reynolds Journalism Institute.
Mayer wrote a terrific follow-up to that workshop that mentions the Boone County Journal in Ashland and the Houston Herald and how they use social media.
Jeff McNiell from the Herald is on the agenda of the MPA Convention in September. Mayer's article will introduce you to how the Herald is using Facebook to reach its audience.
"When it comes to the relationship between a news organization and its community, most of us would do well to pay more attention to small-town newsrooms," Mayer writes.
"These are folks who have: a well-established standing as the go-to place for news, a solid relationship with the people they serve, and a market share that would make bigger operations salivate."
